22 Apr 10 Moving iPhone Apps to New Computer

One of many reasons I loath iTunes is the difficulty in moving your iPod or iPhone to a new computer. I won’t bother with tips on moving music and such, there are plenty of blogs and sites out there to help with that. My main goal is to record for myself and others how to sync your iPhone’s apps to a new computer without losing the apps’ data and settings.

Before you do this, make sure you have a good backup of your phone on the old computer.

For those snoozing in the back, BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR IPHONE FIRST. Caps = Important.

  1. Install iTunes on the new computer. Simple, but it needs to be said.
  2. Get the apps to the new computer. They should be at C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications on Windows Vista or Windows 7. Copy that to your new computer. Location doesn’t matter on the new computer right now.
  3. Start iTunes. I have iTunes set to copy files to my iTunes library when I add things to it. The setting is in Edit >> Preferences >> Advance >> Copy files to iTunes Media folder  when adding to library. I have this setup to let iTunes handle saving all my apps, music, and video to the same location. I  have a habit of leaving the files all over my computer if I don’t have this setup. Having the files in one location makes backup and file management easier.
  4. Drag the apps that copied onto your computer into iTunes to the Library. If you have the setting from step 3 enabled, you can delete the apps you copied over from your old computer.
  5. Plug in your iPhone
  6. In iTunes, click on your iPhone and then the Apps tab
  7. Ensure all your apps are listed here. If they are not, you did not import them correctly.
  8. Check the Sync Apps checkbox

At this point, iTunes will give you a warning that doing this will delete all the apps and data from your iPhone. iTunes is a lying liar. If you are syncing the same apps that are currently on the iPhone, it will not delete the apps’ data. However iTunes will take it upon itself to arrange all your apps in alphabetical order. If you have a lot of apps, it will take some time to move everything back to how you want it. The important bits, the data, will be there at least. The exception to this is if the app is on your iPhone, but not your new computer. If that is the case the app and the data will be deleted. Before you sync the phone to the new computer, make sure all the apps on the phone are also on the new computer.

Finally, click Apply. After the sync, your apps and data will still be on the iPhone and the apps are associated with your new computer. You can now start moving your music and other goodies over.

Your mileage will vary. I did this from Windows Vista to 7 and it worked for me. If it did not work for you, you still are able to restore your iPhone to your last backup. You did do a backup right?

14 Apr 10 N2S: Standalone Flash Installer for Firefox

To avoid using the Adobe download manager, you can get the latest Flash installer for Firefox here:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/flash-standalone-installation-firefox.html

I don’t want to have to install extra software on my computers to download a tiny, tiny file. The “download manager” is unnecessary bloat and a useless piece of software.

I took some notes on the installation process. You can see em after the jump. (more…)

28 May 08 The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round

I’m back to being a bus commuter. The trip now is about 2-3 times longer than at my old job, but it is relaxing. The end result is more time traveling with the benefit now of having a fairly solid I-can’t-work-any-later-than-this time.

With the extra time comes a need for something to do. I have a few podcasts I listen to, but they only run about an hour each. The podcasts only last for a single one way trip and I have only enough to last about half the week. I have 5 hours or so of time to fill up. Reading is a possibility, but reading on a moving vehicle can result in a sick feeling I would like to avoid.

So what I would like from my readers our there are some podcast or audiobook options. I am pondering getting an Audible subscription again, so anything off of Audible.com would be an option.

10 Aug 07 Cleaning Fun!

So with dogs becomes accidents. And with messy accidents comes a wife telling you to clean them up. :) She does have a good excuse there.

So we got some cleaning tools to help us out. We needed a replacement dust buster, ours stopped taking a charge long ago. We picked up a Dirt Devil Scorpion Turbo at Home Depot. I like it. It works great, has a lot fo power, and gets the job done. Only real downside I see is the exhaust vents on the side of the have some high winds coming out of them. If you are vacuuming something that can be blown around easily, use the extender attachment or the dust is gonna fly everywhere.

For the messier… well.. messes, we got a Spot lifter PowerBrush Handheld Deep Cleaner. Gonna have to say avoid this one if you can. The biggest downsides are a small liquid cleaner tank. Seriously, why would the pickup tank be about 4x the side of the cleaner tank. Plus to deploy said cleaner onto said stain, it’s a manual sprayer. You can get better coverage with a pump bottle with more liquid cleaner available. The suction and scrubber is good, but in the liquid deployment area it is very weak.

Both tools will help for spot cleaning. Though my wish list is to get a good wet cleaner that has some good brushes on the end of it. We borrow the local parents steam vac, but it doesn’t have any scrubbing action. It cleans, but takes a lot more passes on the carpet that I think is needed. A good steam vac with some good scrubbing brushes at the bottom would work wonders.

On the dry cleaning side of things, the wish list item is to get a vacuum with a bagless system that I can see how full it is getting. The current vacuum takes bags and it’s hard to tell how full it gets. Plus with how much hair we have in the house (3 huskies and 4 cats, hair-o-rama), it fills up fast so it takes a lot of bags. Something like this Bissell vacuum might be a good option. It has pet specific attachments and a clear dirt bin.

23 Feb 06 World of Warcraft

WoW has been a great destressing tool for me. It’s a fun game and I am able to play with some friends from work. If you are a Wow player with the Horde on Hellscream or an Alliance player on Uther, drop Earthbane on Hellscream or Weatherwax on Uther a line.

01 Jan 06 Extra Websites, What To Do?

After a few server moves and multiple servers, I have two spare domains I need to do something with.

Madtown.cc is my old RSS news feed site. All the sites I normally read were fed to that site so I can see everything in one nice page. Though, now I use Bloglines for that, so I disabled the old software I had running. The old software also really slowed down the server at times. I never tracked down why it did that. I just became fed-up with the performance issures and went to Bloglines.

Fenrir.us is a site I registered for a new server I leased. The one you are connected to right now.  The Fenrir.us site just says hi, and nothing more.

What should I do… a few ideas:

  1. Move my photo gallery to one of the sites
  2. Set-up something to collect all the comics I read on a daily basis to one place.
  3. Some random weird random quote generator… Hmmm, that sounds like fun…
